Chapter 10 - The Night They Came for Lily

“Lily is still inside that apartment.”

Naomi's voice trembled.

She stood beside me as Gabriel contacted the security team.

I had never seen someone become so frightened so quickly.

One moment, Naomi had been reading a report.

The next, she was staring at a photograph of the hallway outside our daughter's bedroom.

“Gabriel,” I said, “tell me what's happening.”

He was speaking into a secure radio.

“Two officers are responding to the building. Our interior security team reported a communication failure. We don't have confirmation of a breach yet.”

I looked at Naomi.

“Lily is with Julie.”

“I know.”

“Julie knows the emergency procedure.”

“I know.”

But knowledge couldn't silence the terror in her eyes.

I wanted to tell her everything would be fine.

I wanted to promise that no one would ever hurt Lily.

But I had learned the difference between reassurance and truth.

So I took Naomi's hand.

“We're going to do everything we can.”

She nodded.

Gabriel reached Julie on her emergency phone.

For several seconds, we heard only quiet breathing.

Then Julie whispered, “We're in the back bedroom.”

“Is Lily with you?” Gabriel asked.

“Yes.”

“Keep the door locked. The police are responding.”

Julie swallowed audibly.

“Someone tried the front door.”

Naomi pressed her free hand against her mouth.

Gabriel's voice remained steady.

“Do not open it. We're arranging your exit.”

A faint sound came through the phone.

Footsteps.

Then a man's voice, distant but audible.

“Building maintenance.”

Julie didn't answer.

Another voice spoke.

“We need to check the alarm system.”

Gabriel looked at me.

I shook my head.

No.

The building's maintenance staff had been informed that the apartment was restricted.

Anyone attempting entry without authorization was suspicious.

Gabriel continued speaking calmly.

“Julie, move to the designated secondary exit. Stay on the phone.”

There was a pause.

Then Lily's small voice.

“Aunt Julie, I'm scared.”

Julie whispered, “I know, sweetheart.”

I closed my eyes.

My daughter was afraid.

Again.

Because people connected to my family believed she was a problem they could erase.

A door opened.

Julie gasped.

The connection crackled.

Then we heard rapid footsteps.

Gabriel was already coordinating with the responding officers.

For several agonizing moments, there was silence.

Then Julie's voice returned.

“We're outside. The police are here.”

Naomi bent forward, struggling to breathe.

I held her.

Gabriel asked, “Is Lily hurt?”

“No,” Julie answered. “She's okay.”

My legs nearly gave out.

A second later, Julie added, “But I fell on the stairs. I think I hurt my wrist.”

“We'll get medical help.”

The police found evidence that two men had attempted to access the apartment using counterfeit maintenance credentials.

One escaped through the building's garage.

The other was detained nearby.

His identification was false.

But the photograph recovered from his phone matched the man I'd seen beside Carlo in the Moretti Tower security footage.

Adrian Voss.

The same man who had reached for Naomi's arm.

The same man who had covered the security camera.

And the man whose associates had apparently spent years helping Carlo silence anyone who threatened him.

I wanted to go directly to the police station.

Simone advised me to let investigators handle the interviews.

She had already arranged for relevant evidence to be preserved.

For once, I listened.

An hour later, Naomi and I arrived at a secure family assistance facility where Julie and Lily had been taken.

Lily was sitting on a sofa beneath a blanket.

She clutched Bunny against her chest.

The moment she saw Naomi, she ran into her arms.

“Mommy!”

Naomi dropped to her knees.

“Oh, baby.”

She held Lily's face between her hands.

“Are you okay?”

Lily nodded.

“Bunny got scared.”

Naomi laughed through her tears.

“I bet he did.”

Then Lily looked at me.

“Daddy?”

The word struck me with such force that I almost forgot to breathe.

It was the first time she'd called me that.

I knelt beside her.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Can you sit with us?”

I opened my arms.

She climbed into them.

Naomi sat close enough that our shoulders touched.

For a while, none of us said anything.

Julie watched from across the room, her injured wrist wrapped in a temporary splint.

Gabriel stood near the door.

And I realized something.

This was what my father had never understood.

Family wasn't a possession.

It wasn't a company name.

It wasn't a collection of people expected to obey you.

Family was sitting on a cold floor at two in the morning because a frightened child needed to know she wasn't alone.

Eventually, Lily fell asleep against my chest.

I carried her to a small bedroom and tucked the blanket around her.

Her stuffed rabbit rested beneath one arm.

I stayed until her breathing became slow and even.

When I returned to the hallway, Naomi was waiting.

She looked exhausted.

“I almost lost her,” she whispered.

I shook my head.

“No.”

“But I could have.”

“Yes.”

She stared at me.

“I don't know how much more of this I can survive.”

I took her hand.

“Then we need to end it.”

Naomi looked at me.

“How?”

“By taking away the power Carlo keeps using to frighten everyone.”

Gabriel approached.

“Dante, there's something you need to see.”

He handed me his phone.

A message had arrived from the corporate secretary of Moretti Holdings.

An emergency board meeting had been scheduled for the following morning.

The agenda included an investigation into alleged financial misconduct.

And a motion to suspend me from all executive duties.

I read the message twice.

“Who requested the meeting?”

Gabriel looked grim.

“Carlo.”

I almost smiled.

Of course.

My uncle had failed to recover the evidence.

Now he intended to remove me from the company before I could expose him.

But then Gabriel showed me the attached legal notice.

It accused me of personally authorizing fraudulent transfers from the Harbor Light Relief Trust.

My own forged signature was being used against me.

And beneath the accusation was another authorization.

A temporary freeze on certain assets and company accounts under my control.

It had been approved by the chairman.

My father.

Vittorio Moretti.

I stared at his signature.

Then my phone rang.

Dad.

I answered.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he said, “Dante, don't fight the board tomorrow.”

“Why?”

His voice sounded hollow.

“Because Carlo has evidence that could send you to prison.”

I looked through the glass toward the room where Lily slept.

Then I asked the question that had been waiting inside me for five years.

“Dad, whose side are you on?”

There was a long silence.

May you like

And then my father whispered something that frightened me more than any threat.

“I'm beginning to think I've been on the wrong side for thirty years.”
