Chapter 10: Dawn at the Foundation Atrium

The morning sun reflected blindingly off the towering glass-and-steel facade of the foundation headquarters as our town car pulled up to the main curb. A phalanx of financial journalists and camera crews had already gathered near the revolving brass doors, tipped off by an anonymous leak regarding an emergency board meeting. As the driver clicked open the rear door, I took a deep, grounding breath, adjusting the lapels of my dark wool coat and smoothing my round glasses. Julian stepped out first, extending a hand to help me onto the polished stone pavement.

The moment my feet touched the ground, flashbulbs erupted like a sudden lightning storm. Microphones thrust forward from the surging crowd, cutting through the morning chill with sharp, invasive shouts.

"Mr. Vance! Is it true the foundation is facing insolvency?"

"Who is the woman with you? Is the merger falling apart?"

Julian did not flinch. He kept his hand firmly at the small of my back, guiding me forward with deliberate, unhurried grace. When a reporter thrust a recorder inches from my face, Julian stepped slightly in front of me, his voice carrying a calm, authoritative resonance that cut through the noise.

"No statements will be made outside," Julian announced, his gaze fixed straight ahead. "My wife and I have an executive presentation to deliver."

The word hung in the damp morning air, striking the reporters with immediate effect. Heads whipped around; cameras clicked frantically as the implications of his public statement registered. I felt a surge of adrenaline race through my veins, replacing any lingering hesitation. This wasn't a private dinner game anymore; this was public, permanent, and entirely unalterable.

We strode through the revolving glass doors into the cavernous, marble-floored atrium. Security guards in crisp black uniforms moved to intercept the press at the inner threshold, locking the heavy brass barriers behind us with a resounding thud that echoed off the high ceiling. The sudden silence inside the lobby was profound, broken only by the distant hum of the climate control and the steady click of our heels against the polished stone floor.

"They're waiting on the forty-second floor," Julian murmured, keeping his stride matched to mine as we approached the private executive elevators. He tapped his security badge against the glass scanner, and the doors slid open instantly with a soft chime.

As we stepped into the mirrored interior and the doors began to close, reflecting our mirrored images standing shoulder to shoulder, I looked up at him. His expression was completely composed, a mask of cold determination masking whatever personal risk he was taking for my sake.

"Ready?" he asked quietly as the elevator began its rapid, silent ascent.

"More than ready," I replied, pulling the canvas tote containing the original physical ledgers a little closer to my side. "Let's go see what Victoria has to say for herself now."
