Chapter 10 - Sanctuary in the Outskirts

The exchange of gunfire in the loading dock was brief, sharp, and deafening in the enclosed concrete space. Gideon subdued the second intruder with a swift strike to the temple, leaving both men unconscious on the oil-stained pavement before the building's automated alarm could fully register the breach. Without wasting a single heartbeat, Roman grabbed my hand, pulling me through the side exit into the rainy alley where a nondescript black SUV sat idling with its headlights off.
"Get in," Roman ordered, throwing open the passenger door as Gideon slid into the driver's seat and slammed his door shut.
The SUV surged forward, tearing out of the alley and into the rain-slicked maze of downtown streets before the precinct or corporate security could lock down the perimeter. We drove north for forty minutes, leaving the glittering towers of the financial district far behind as the urban sprawl gave way to dense pine forests and winding county roads. The tension inside the cabin was palpable, every shadow cast by the passing headlights feeling like a potential ambush.
We finally turned down an unpaved gravel driveway hidden behind a thick stand of cedar trees, pulling up to a modest, stone-and-timber safe house nestled against the slope of a dark hillside. There were no exterior lights, no signs of life, and no indication that anyone had visited the property in months.
"This place belongs to an old friend of Vane's," Roman said as he cut the engine, the sudden silence broken only by the steady hiss of rain against the windshield. He turned to look at me in the dim dashboard light, his expression softening just fractionally from the hard edge of the city. "Safe for now. Until we verify who else inside the corporation is leaking our movements."

I looked out at the dark, sheltering trees, feeling the exhaustion finally pull at my bones, yet knowing the danger was far from over. I turned back to Roman, resting my hand on the leather briefcase containing the truth of our past. "We finish this here," I said quietly.
Roman nodded, his gaze holding mine with a steady, unbreakable resolve. "We finish it together."
