Chapter 1 - The Heavy Breaths in the Doorway

The air inside the penthouse nursery felt too thin, pressed flat by the low hum of the city skyline lights bleeding through the floor-to-ceiling windows. I stood beside the white baby crib, my fingers resting gently against my abdomen, feeling the slow, rhythmic shift of new life beneath my palm. Across the room, framed by the white door, he stood in his tailored black suit and black tie. His short dark hair was ruffled, and a dark shadow of stubble dusted his jaw. Ink traced the edges of his neck above his collar, dark and permanent under the recessed ceiling lights. He was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling beneath the fine wool of his jacket in a ragged, distressed rhythm that filled the quiet apartment.
He didn't speak. He just tightened his jaw, closing his eyes briefly as he exhaled a long, heavy breath that seemed to pull all the oxygen from the room.
I kept my hand on my stomach, anchoring myself against the sudden coldness that drifted off the glass. In the narrow gap of the slightly open white door behind him, a flash of emerald caught my eye. The blonde woman in the green dress stood half-concealed in the hallway shadows, watching us with wide, frantic eyes. A soft gasp escaped her lips, barely audible over the faint ambient night sounds rising from the street far below. She pressed one hand to her throat, her anxiety thickening the space between the rooms, an unspoken witness to a collision long overdue.
The man didn't look back at her. His eyes opened, fixed entirely on me. With deliberate slowness, he stepped fully across the threshold into the nursery, closing the physical distance between us. The floorboards gave a faint, familiar creak beneath his shoes.

We stood face-to-face in the quiet sanctuary of the nursery, surrounded by the pale wood furniture and the looming presence of the city outside. The silence between us was heavier than any words could be, charged with a danger that neither of us dared name. In the hallway, the blonde woman shifted slightly, her silhouette retreating deeper into the shadows as the standoff began.
