Chapter 14 - THE LAST LIEDr. Evelyn Voss had spent decades believing she was untouchable.

She had manipulated politicians, businessmen, prison administrators, and frightened families.
She had built a system that turned human suffering into profit.
And she had convinced herself that intelligence made her superior to the people she exploited.
Now she sat inside a stolen security vehicle with a frightened doctor beside her and police units approaching from three directions.
For the first time in years, she had nowhere left to hide.
Lucie reached the outer courtyard as Inspector Laurent's tactical team secured the prison.
The air outside felt cold and clean.
After hours inside Building D, even the wind seemed unfamiliar.
Laurent approached.
She was a woman in her late forties, with tired eyes and a determined expression.
"Lucie Serrano?"
Lucie nodded.
"Where's Samuel?"
"With the medical evacuation team."
Laurent's face crumpled.
"Is he hurt?"
"He's frightened. But he's alive."
Laurent covered her mouth.
For a moment, she seemed unable to move.
Then she whispered, "Thank you."
Lucie shook her head.
"Julien saved him."
Laurent looked toward Building D.
"Then I owe your brother more than I can ever repay."
Lucie swallowed.
"He's been shot."
Laurent's expression changed.
"Where is he?"
"Inside. They're treating him."
Laurent immediately contacted the medical response team.
Then a loudspeaker crackled.
Voss's voice filled the courtyard.
"All police units, withdraw from the gate."
Lucie turned.
The stolen vehicle had stopped near the perimeter fence.
Voss held a gun against the doctor's head.
"Let me leave," she shouted, "or he dies."
Laurent raised a hand to stop the officers from advancing.
Lucie stepped forward.
"Let me talk to her."
Laurent hesitated.
"She's dangerous."
"I know."
"She may shoot you."
Lucie looked toward the vehicle.
"She's already tried."
Laurent studied her.
Then nodded.
"Stay behind the barrier."
Lucie took the loudspeaker.
"Evelyn."
Voss looked toward her.
"Lieutenant Serrano. Still alive, I see."
"Your research is over."
Voss laughed.
"You have no idea how many people are invested in my work."
"Then they'll be investigated too."
"You think you can destroy decades of scientific progress?"
Lucie shook her head.
"Science isn't the problem."
Voss frowned.
"Then what is?"
"The way you treated people."
Voss's expression hardened.
"Sentimentality."
"No. Humanity."
Lucie stepped closer to the barrier.
"You had knowledge that could have helped families. You used it to control them."
Voss tightened her grip on the doctor.
"I changed the world."
"You destroyed lives."
"History will judge me differently."
Lucie looked directly at her.
"History will remember the names of the people you tried to erase."
Voss's smile vanished.
"The records are mine."
"No."
Lucie raised the evidence drive.
"They belong to the people whose lives you stole."
Voss stared at it.
For the first time, real panic crossed her face.
"You don't understand what you've done."
"I understand exactly."
"You've exposed confidential research."
"I've exposed crimes."
Voss looked toward the approaching officers.
Then toward the outer gate.
She had run out of options.
"Give me the drive."
Lucie shook her head.
"No."
Voss pressed the gun harder against the doctor's head.
"Then he dies."
Lucie felt fear rise inside her.
But she forced herself to remain still.
"His name is Dr. Adrian Moreau."
Voss blinked.
"What?"
"The man you're holding. His name is Adrian Moreau. He's forty-two. He has a wife and two daughters."
The doctor began trembling.
Lucie continued.
"His youngest daughter starts school next month."
Voss looked irritated.
"Stop talking."
"He isn't a bargaining chip, Evelyn."
"Shut up."
"He's a person."
For a moment, the doctor's eyes met Lucie's.
Something changed in his expression.
He was no longer simply waiting to be rescued.
He was remembering that his life mattered.
That he had people waiting for him.
That he had something worth surviving for.
Voss glanced toward the gate.
The doctor moved.
He pulled away from her arm and dropped behind the vehicle's open door.
A shot rang out.
Lucie ducked.
Police officers rushed forward.
Voss tried to run.
She made it only a few steps before the officers surrounded her.
"Drop the weapon!"
She hesitated.
Then slowly lowered the gun.
The handcuffs clicked around her wrists.
For the first time in decades, Evelyn Voss had lost control.
Lucie watched as the officers led her away.
She felt no triumph.
No satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Then Laurent approached.
"She's in custody."
Lucie nodded.
"What about Bellamy?"
"Alive. Critical condition. Under guard."
"And Mara?"
"Receiving treatment. She'll face charges, but her cooperation will be documented."
Lucie looked toward the prison.
"What about Valois?"
Laurent's expression darkened.
"He surrendered his credentials. He's agreed to testify."
Lucie closed her eyes.
So many lives.
So many lies.
So much damage.
And still, only one question mattered.
"Julien?"
Laurent hesitated.
Lucie's heart stopped.
"Tell me."
"The medical team is taking him to the hospital."
"Is he alive?"
Laurent looked at her.
"Yes."
Lucie exhaled.
Then Laurent's expression changed.
"But there's something you need to know."
Lucie stared at her.
"What?"
Laurent lowered her voice.
