Chapter 1 - The First Confrontation In The Moonlight

The cool nighttime moonlight filtering through the tall French doors did little to warm the heavy air of the bedroom. The crystal chandelier above caught the pale illumination, casting delicate, fractured sparkles across the elegant white crown molding and the floor-to-ceiling draped curtains. I sat unmoving in the modern black wheelchair, the smooth fabric of my black silk pajamas shifting slightly as I tightened my grip. In the center of the room, nestled within the plush bed with its crisp white linens, the young woman with dark hair dressed in a black-and-white maid's uniform slept soundly, her breathing soft and even against the quiet tension of the house.

My eyes remained fixed on her, a cold knot tightening in my chest. This was my private sanctuary, a space where no staff were permitted after midnight, let alone permitted to sleep in the bed intended only for me. The audacity of her presence rankled, but a strange, hesitant curiosity kept me from calling security right away. Instead, I wheeled myself closer, the heavy silence of the room amplifying the faint roll of the casters against the hardwood floor.

I leaned forward, my gaze sweeping over her relaxed posture, the dark strands of hair spilled across the white pillowcase. The injustice of finding an intruder in my quarters grated against my need for absolute control. I let out a sharp breath, breaking the stillness of the room as I glared downward at her.

"Who told you to come in here?" I demanded, my voice cutting through the dim room with a sharp, low edge.

She stirred instantly at the sound, her eyelids fluttering before she shifted deeper into the mattress. A low, sleepy murmur slipped past her lips, filled with an exhaustion that sounded entirely genuine.

"If I start working, I don't get paid," she muttered, her words slurring together as sleep pulled her back under.

The unexpected defense caught me off guard. There was no defiance in her tone, only a weary resignation that spoke of long hours and invisible labor within these walls. Hesitating for a fraction of a second, I reached out with my right hand, extending my fingers to gently touch her head, brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her forehead. Her skin was warm, contrasting sharply with the chilled air of the bedroom.

As my hand pulled back, I curled my fingers inward, tightening my fist against the wheelchair grip. Hidden snugly within my palm rested a small concealed metallic device—a micro-drive containing financial records that could dismantle everything my family had built on deception. The cold metal pressed sharply into my skin, grounding me.

Then, a movement caught my periphery. Near the edge of the plush bed, I noticed her hand resting near my waist, fingers curled over a small bulge in the fabric of her apron pocket. My eyes widened in sudden shock and realization. The breath caught in my throat as I stared down at her hand, the sudden terror of exposure sending a jolt through my chest.

"What are you hiding?" I whispered, my voice tightening as the realization took hold.

Instinctively, I glanced up, my eyes darting toward the entryway. Through the narrow crack of the carved wooden door, a second man peered anxiously into the room, watching the tense scene unfold in silence. His silhouette was faint in the shadows of the hallway, his posture rigid, observing every movement with a calculating stillness that chilled me more than the midnight breeze.
