Chapter 10: The Breach at the Door

The blue light of the tablet screen cast sharp shadows across the dark wood of the dressing table, illuminating the precise wire transfers that bound the entire conspiracy together. Lily had finally fallen asleep, curled into a tight ball on the velvet sofa, her breathing slow and even beneath the wool blanket I had draped over her shoulders. The man in the black suit remained seated across from me, his thumb tracing the smooth edge of the desk. Every file we had opened pointed directly to a systematic attempt to bankrupt his holdings by removing him from the board permanently.
Then the silence of the suite was shattered.
A heavy, frantic pounding echoed against the thick oak of the dressing suite door, rattling the brass handle in its housing. I jumped, my hand flying to my mouth to stifle a sharp intake of breath. Lily stirred on the sofa, letting out a soft whimper before settling back into a deep, exhausted sleep.
The man in the black suit didn't flinch. He stood up slowly, smoothing the jacket of his black suit with deliberate calm, his eyes fixed on the heavy entryway.
"Open the door," a voice hissed from the hallway. It was muffled by the thick wood, but the piercing desperation in the tone was unmistakable. The cool, aristocratic composure of the woman in the blue gown was completely gone, replaced by a raw, jagged panic. "Open this door right now. We need to talk about what's on those drives."
The man walked toward the private entryway, his steps measured and heavy against the carpet. He stopped a foot away from the door, his shoulders squared.
"There is nothing left to discuss between us," he said, his voice level, carrying effortlessly through the solid panels. "The files are secured. The police and the corporate auditors have already been dispatched to this floor."
A sharp, ragged laugh echoed from the corridor, followed by another furious series of blows against the wood. It wasn't the brute strength of someone trying to break down a barricade; it was the frantic, clawing desperation of a cornered animal realizing the cage had locked from the outside.
"You can't do this," she cried out, her voice cracking, losing all trace of its former elegance. "You'll ruin everything we've built. The board will tear you apart if this gets out to the public. Just open the door and we can settle this quietly, away from the witnesses."
"You should have thought about witnesses before you had a glass of wine prepared," he replied coldly, resting one hand near the deadbolt. "The authorities are already on their way up the private elevator. Your accomplice has nowhere left to run, and neither do you."

A heavy silence fell over the hallway, broken only by the sound of ragged, uneven breathing just on the other side of the timber. For a terrifying second, I thought she might throw her full weight against the barrier again, or find some way to override the electronic keypad from the outside. I gripped the edge of the dressing table, my knuckles turning white, watching the man's silhouette against the dim light of the hallway sconces.
Slowly, the sound of hurried, muffled footsteps began to recede down the carpeted corridor, tapping away in desperate retreat toward the grand ballroom. The threat of the breach had passed, leaving behind a profound, tense quiet in the suite. The man in the black suit let out a slow breath, turning his head slightly to look back at me through the shadows, confirming that we were still safe inside.
