Chapter 1 - The Weight of Brass

The chandelier light caught the tarnished edge of the brass compass, throwing a sliver of gold across the white marble floor. Julian Vance did not blink. The chatter around the gala had evaporated into a brittle silence, broken only by the hum of the cooling vents overhead. He held the open wooden box like an open wound. Inside, engraved in flowing, weathered script, was the name that had haunted the boardrooms of the Eastern seaboard for thirty years: Samuel Holloway.

Clara stood frozen before him. Her security uniform felt suffocating, the cheap polyester scratching at her throat. "He was my grandfather," she repeated, her voice cracking under the scrutiny of hundreds of eyes. Whispers rippled through the gallery—socialites who had traded Holloway steel shares before the collapse, men who remembered the headlines of a disgraced titan walking into the ocean with an empty vault left behind.

Julian’s jaw tightened. He snapped the box shut with a hollow thud that echoed against the fluted pillars. "Samuel Holloway wasn’t a thief who drowned in shame," he said, loud enough to cut through the snickering blonde woman in the silk gown. "He was the architect of every foundation you stand on tonight." He turned squarely to Clara, his dark eyes fierce with an unreadable desperation. "And this compass never leaves the pocket of his true bloodline. Where has he been, Clara?"
