Chapter 1: The Chandelier and the Call

The crystal chandeliers overhead cast fractured amber glints across the polished marble floors, turning the grand luxury hallway into a stage of deceptive brilliance. I stood pressed against the cool, neutral wall, the heavy fabric of my black and white uniform pulling tight across my shoulder blades as the cold reality of the threat settled deep into my chest. Just inches away, the woman in the light gold sequined dress leaned in with an intensity that sucked the air right out of the corridor. Her blonde hair, pinned in a flawless updo, caught the warm key light from the wall sconces while her silver hoop earrings caught the motion of her sharp, deliberate movements.

"Unless you want your son to disappear from school tomorrow."

My name is Elena. I was just trying to finish my morning corridor sweep before the master of the house woke, holding my cleaning caddy with white-knuckled grip when Vivien cornered me beside the pilaster.

The air in the hallway grew dead still, save for the faint hum of distant HVAC vents and the rising panic in my throat. I stared up into her stern, unyielding eyes, seeing the casual cruelty of someone who viewed human lives as disposable chess pieces. My breath hitched, a sharp intake of air tearing past my lips as my hands flew to clutch the white fabric collar of my maid uniform. My eyes widened in absolute fear, reflecting the golden shimmer of her dress like a pair of trapped animals. I opened my mouth to form a plea, to beg her to leave my boy out of whatever bitter game she was playing with the household staff, but no sound would come past the constriction in my windpipe.

Vivien didn't blink. She merely tilted her chin higher, savoring the terror radiating off my trembling frame. "You think loyalty to the others will save you?" she murmured, her voice dropping to a harsh, private register that carried easily across the open expanse. "Think about his backpack left unclaimed in the courtyard. Think about the empty desk."

Before I could force my vocal cords to obey, a heavy footstep echoed against the marble a few yards behind us. I caught movement in my peripheral vision—a tall figure stepping out from the shadowed transition of the cross-hallway. It was the man in the impeccably tailored black suit, his dark wavy hair catching the ambient amber glow. He held a smartphone pressed firmly to his ear, his fingers resting casually against the dark fabric of his sleeve while his expression hardened into a grim, menacing mask of absolute concentration. He had been listening the entire time. Every harsh syllable Vivien had spoken had traveled straight through the open receiver into his ear.

He slowed his pace, walking forward with a cold, deliberate authority that commanded the entire space without requiring a single raised voice. The warm indoor lighting carved sharp shadows across his jawline as he stared directly at the back of Vivien's golden dress, his eyes narrowing with a predator's quiet focus.

The man stopped dead in his tracks, lowering the phone just an inch from his ear while keeping his dark gaze locked forward. The dramatic bass drop of the hallway's ambient acoustics seemed to settle in the very floorboards beneath our shoes.

"Turn around, Vivien."
