Chapter 6: Monday Morning at Headquarters

The lobby of the Vance Foundation downtown tower smelled of polished brass, expensive espresso, and quiet intimidation. By Monday morning, the atmosphere had shifted from standard corporate efficiency to a tense, suffocating pressure. I sat in Julian's private corner office on the forty-second floor, the panoramic view of the skyline blurred by a steady morning fog. On the mahogany conference table before me lay a thick stack of printed email threads, bank transfer logs, and internal memos I had secretly copied before Arthur Pendelton had me fired six months ago.

The heavy oak door swung open without warning. Arthur Pendelton strode in, his black mandarin-collar suit immaculate, his face flushed with righteous arrogance. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw me sitting across from Julian, who remained seated behind his massive desk with his fingers steepled beneath his chin.

"Julian, what is the meaning of this?" Arthur demanded, gesturing sharply toward me with the back of his hand. "Why is a disgruntled former clerk sitting in an executive suite? Security should have escorted her off the property the moment she walked through the revolving doors."

"Shut the door, Arthur, and sit down," Julian said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried the absolute authority of a man whose family name was chiseled into the limestone facade of the building.

Arthur hesitated, his eyes darting between Julian and the thick file folders spread across the desk. Slowly, deliberately, he stepped inside and clicked the lock on the heavy door. "You're dragging the foundation's name through the mud over a petty theft suspect," Arthur hissed, leaning over the table. "She staged an incident at an upscale restaurant to extort us. I have legal precedent to have her arrested right now."

"You have a federal subpoena heading your desk by noon," Julian replied calmly, sliding a single sheet of paper across the polished wood toward Arthur. It was a forensic accounting breakdown detailing the diversion of three hundred emergency relief grants into shell accounts controlled by Arthur's brother-in-law. "The board doesn't know about this yet, Arthur. But they will at the emergency meeting in ten minutes. You can resign quietly, surrender your pension, and cooperate with the district attorney's office, or we can broadcast these bank records to every news outlet in the state."
