Chapter 1 - The Champagne Flute And The Transfer

The warmth of the chandelier lighting filtered down through the high ceilings of the ballroom, catching the white pillars and casting a soft, amber glow across the sea of blurred guests in formal wear. Around us, the low, steady hum of high-society conversation and the occasional sharp clinking of glassware created a dense wall of ambient noise. Yet, within that crowded luxury, the space between Adriana and me felt entirely hollowed out, stripped of everything except the weight of what was about to happen.

Adriana stood before me in a gold glitter off-the-shoulder evening gown that caught every flicker of the overhead lights, her high leg slit cutting a sharp line against the dark floor. Her dark hair was styled in an intricate updo, elegant and severe, but the tension in her posture gave her away. She looked at me with an unspoken question, a mixture of hesitation and dread shimmering in her eyes.

I looked back at her, keeping my face steady despite the cold knot tightening in my chest.

"It's okay," I said.

My voice was quiet, steady enough to cut through the immediate air between us without carrying across the floor. Adriana’s breathing hitched slightly, her gaze dropping for a fraction of a second to my right hand.

I turned my attention to the crystal champagne flute I had been holding all evening. The stem felt delicate, almost impossibly fragile against my skin. With fingers that began to tremble despite my best efforts to steady them, I gently set the flute down on a passing silver-tray table beside a pillar. The glass made a faint, sharp tap against the metal.

That single movement seemed to draw the air tighter around us. I lifted my left hand, the skin stark against the metallic silver sequined gown I wore with its deep cowl neckline. Resting against my finger was the small gold wedding ring—the physical anchor of a life that had long since turned into a cage.

I slid the band off, the metal cool against my skin, and reached out. Without breaking eye contact with Adriana, I placed the small gold ring directly into her open palm. Her fingers curled inward instinctively, closing over the gold as if the metal burned her skin.

A sharp intake of breath registered nearby.

I didn't need to look to know who it was. The atmosphere in our immediate orbit shifted instantly, growing heavy and oppressive. I shifted my gaze slightly and saw Julian standing a few paces away. He was immaculate in his tailored black suit and crisp dress shirt, the dark ink of his neck tattoos peeking just above the collar. His dark eyes had narrowed into an intense, unblinking glare, fixed entirely on the two of us with a cold, predatory focus that promised retribution.

"Adriana," Julian said.

The name dropped into the space between us like a weighted stone, dripping with quiet authority and the absolute expectation of obedience. It was a command wrapped in a whisper, a demand for immediate submission from the woman standing across from me.

For a heartbeat, Adriana froze, her shoulders stiffening under the golden fabric of her gown. Then, slowly, she glanced down toward Julian, weighing the danger in his face before lifting her chin. She turned her gaze back to me, her expression hardening into a quiet resolve as I looked calmly ahead past the chaos of the ballroom.

May you like

"He's yours," Adriana said.
