Chapter 12 - The Staged Press Conference

The television screen in my loft flickered with the cold, blue-white glare of cable news as the midday broadcast cut live to the grand auditorium of Julian’s corporate foundation tower. I stood a few feet back from the screen, a mug of black coffee cooling in my hand, watching the familiar marble pillars and the sea of expectant reporters packed tight against the risers. The banner running across the bottom of the screen flashed in bold red letters: FOUNDATION CRISIS: JULIAN VANCE ADDRESSES UNFOUNDED ALLEGATIONS.
Julian stepped up to the mahogany podium. He wore a dark charcoal suit, meticulously tailored, his white shirt stiff and his tie knotted with exact precision. Gone was the panicked, wide-eyed man from the ballroom who had stammered and stared as I handed Vanetha the sapphire ring. He had spent the last week behind closed doors with high-priced crisis publicists, rebuilding his facade of calm authority, practicing the micro-expressions of an aggrieved leader wronged by an unstable subordinate.
"For months, the integrity of this institution has been subjected to whispers, mischaracterizations, and malicious leaks," Julian began, his voice resonant, steady, and practiced, carrying that familiar cadence of manufactured sincerity. He looked directly into the primary camera lens, projecting wounded dignity. "As executive director, my responsibility has always been to protect the research, the staff, and the vision we’ve built together. Unfortunately, personal instability within our senior ranks has spilled into the public sphere, creating a false narrative designed to damage the foundation's vital work."
I took a slow sip of the bitter coffee, watching him lean slightly into the microphone. He was laying the groundwork for the audit's pre-emption, framing my departure from the gala and my financial inquiries not as uncovering corporate malfeasance, but as a disgruntled partner lashing out after a personal rejection. It was a calculated, ruthless play—classic Julian. He relied entirely on the assumption that his status, his polished delivery, and the weight of his corporate title would drown out any quiet truths I was assembling with Marcus.
"Are these allegations of fund mismanagement entirely fabricated, Mr. Vance?" shouted a reporter from the front row, holding a digital recorder aloft. "What about the rumors regarding the board’s withheld financial disclosures?"
Julian raised a single, well-manicured hand, a gesture of patient forbearance. "Every dollar entrusted to this foundation is accounted for. The independent audit currently underway will confirm our absolute transparency. What we are dealing with is a regrettable conflation of personal grievances—specifically, an ungrounded attempt to weaponize administrative processes for personal leverage."
The camera panned across the auditorium, capturing the nodding heads of several junior executives planted in the audience. The spin was working; the room was eating it up. Julian cleared his throat, preparing to deliver his closing remarks and seal the narrative before anyone could dig deeper.
Then the side doors of the auditorium swung open.
The camera tracking was slow to shift, but the murmurs in the crowd drowned out Julian's voice. A tall figure in a sharp, structured red silk dress walked down the center aisle, moving with a calm, deliberate stride that commanded every eye in the room. It was Vanetha.
Julian stopped mid-sentence. His jaw tightened, the carefully constructed mask of professional serenity fracturing in real time as he recognized the woman in the red dress walking straight toward the press staging area.
Vanetha didn't stop at the rows of seated journalists. She walked right up to the side of the raised press platform, reached up to take the auxiliary microphone resting on the reporter's stand, and spoke clearly into the feed.
"The audit won't confirm transparency, Julian, because there isn't any," Vanetha's voice echoed flatly through the auditorium speakers and straight into my living room.
The press corps erupted instantly, flashbulbs blinding the lenses, reporters shouting overlapping questions that blurred into a chaotic roar. Julian gripped the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles turned stark white, his mouth opening to speak, but no sound came out.
"My name is Vanetha Ross," she continued, her voice unwavering as she stared up at the man who had tried to use her as a shield. "And I was asked to wear that red dress, and hold that sapphire ring, to create a public distraction from the missing foundation accounts. Evelyn didn't orchestrate a breakdown. She walked away because she uncovered the truth about what is buried in those ledgers. And I am here to help make sure the public sees every single page of it."

On the television screen, Julian turned pale, his eyes darting frantically toward the wings of the stage where his handlers stood paralyzed. The live broadcast captured every micro-expression of absolute panic, broadcasting his unraveling to millions of viewers across the country. I set my coffee mug down on the counter, watching the polished corporate facade collapse completely under the weight of actual, unvarnished truth.
