Chapter 14 - Clearing the Threshold

The morning air smelled of wet earth and pine needles as the storm clouds cleared away, leaving behind a brilliant, washed blue sky over the hills. Down on the main drive, the black sedan stood freshly waxed and gleaming in the sunlight, its engine idling with a smooth, powerful purr that signaled total health.
I stood on the stone steps of the front portico, adjusting the collar of my cardigan as I watched Sal load a set of pristine leather-bound logbooks into the car’s trunk. The estate was operating with an efficiency it hadn't seen in years. The legal proceedings regarding Vanessa’s asset diversion were moving quietly through private arbitration, ensuring the family name remained protected from public spectacle while justice took its course.
Luca stepped out through the double oak doors behind me, carrying a single manila folder addressed to the county tax assessor. He paused beside me on the landing, his gaze following mine down to where Sal was wiping down the chrome grill.
"Looks like everything is running like clockwork," Luca said, his arm brushing lightly against mine as he stopped at the stone balustrade.
"Sal’s been up since five," I replied with a small smile. "He insisted on tuning the suspension himself. He said a Moretti car shouldn't rattle on gravel."
"He's right," Luca chuckled softly, turning his head to look at me. The sunlight caught the dark waves of his hair and the sharp lines of his beard, but his expression was entirely relaxed. "Are you ready to head into town? The foundation board meeting starts at ten, and the directors need to meet the new administrative director officially."
I turned to face him, feeling a quiet confidence settle over me. "I have my notes and the audit summaries right here." I held up the leather portfolio. "I'm ready."

Luca smiled, a genuine, unreserved expression that transformed his entire face. He reached out, taking the portfolio from my hands with one smooth motion and placing it under his arm, then extended his hand toward me. I slipped my fingers into his palm without hesitation.
Together, we walked down the grand stone steps, leaving the shadows of the past behind us. As we reached the bottom, Sal looked up from the sedan, gave a respectful nod, and opened the rear door for us. The heavy iron gates stood wide open to the valley below, framing a future built on truth, mutual respect, and an unshakeable foundation.
