Chapter 6 - CLAIRE'S LAST SECRETI almost threw the letter away.

Instead, I read it.

Claire confessed that she had known exactly who Emmett was before their first conversation.

She had attended the charity event because she knew he would be there.

But that wasn't the lie.

The lie concerned Margot.

Claire had met her once before.

Years earlier.

Phoebe had brought baby Margot to the social-services office.

Claire remembered holding her.

Only for a minute.

Phoebe had smiled and said:

“This little girl taught me that love gets bigger when you give it away.”

I stopped reading.

The irony was almost unbearable.

Claire had spent years trying to disprove the lesson Phoebe had given her.

At the end, Claire wrote:

I don't expect forgiveness. I only want Margot to know that her mother once helped a stranger when she had nothing to gain. I repaid that kindness terribly. Please don't let my failure become part of Phoebe's legacy.

I showed the letter to Emmett.

He read it silently.

Then folded it.

“What do we tell Margot?”

“The truth.”

“All of it?”

“When she's old enough.”

He nodded.

“And Claire?”

“What about her?”

“Do we answer?”

I thought about it.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“Not yet.”

Some apologies are offered because the person who caused harm needs relief.

Forgiveness should never become another burden placed on the injured.

Claire needed to learn to live without demanding anything from Margot.

That was part of accountability too.

Months passed.

Margot started kindergarten.

Her laughter returned.

Emmett went to therapy.

So did Margot.

And eventually, so did I.

I hadn't realized how much fear I had been carrying.

Fear of losing Margot.

Fear of losing Emmett.

Fear that every new person entering our family could take something away.

Then one afternoon, Margot brought home an assignment.

A family tree.

She spread it across my kitchen table.

There was Emmett.

Phoebe.

Me.

Helen.

And several crooked branches drawn in purple crayon.

She pointed at an empty space.

“Grandpa?”

“Yes?”

“Can families grow new branches?”

“Of course.”

“Even if somebody dies?”

“Especially then.”

She smiled.

And for the first time, I realized something.

Claire had failed to erase Phoebe.

But if we weren't careful, fear could stop us from ever allowing anyone new into our lives.

That would be another kind of tragedy.

Then Emmett called.

His voice sounded strange.

“Walter?”

May you like

“Yes?”

“I met someone.”
