Chapter 13 - THE EMPIRE BUILT ON BROKEN FAMILIES

The revelation changed everything.
Élodie had believed Laurent was the center of the conspiracy.
But now she saw the larger structure.
Étienne Delmas.
A respected philanthropist.
A man praised for funding schools, hospitals, and community programs.
A man who had spent decades cultivating powerful relationships.
And a man Gabriel believed had secretly directed the foundation's fraudulent operations.
Claire immediately cautioned against assuming every allegation was proven.
“We need evidence,” she said. “Connections aren't enough.”
Élodie nodded.
“Then we find it.”
Gabriel explained that the secure archive in Montreal contained original accounting records, internal communications, and copies of documents showing how the foundation had moved funds.
The silver key and brass token were part of the physical access process.
The black key identified a separate evidence container.
Marianne Delacroix held the final authorization.
But Gabriel had insisted on one safeguard.
The evidence could only be released through a documented procedure involving independent legal witnesses.
He had created that system because he knew Laurent would eventually try to force someone to surrender the files.
Now the time had come.
Marianne traveled to Montreal with legal counsel.
Gabriel provided his authorization from the hospital.
Élodie participated through her lawyer.
The archive was opened under controlled conditions.
Inside were hard drives, signed documents, and sealed records.
Some files dated back more than fifteen years.
They showed a pattern.
Money diverted from charitable programs.
Investors misled about where their funds were going.
Private information used to pressure vulnerable people.
Payments routed through companies connected to Laurent, Adrien, Isabelle, Hélène, and Étienne.
There were also records concerning Gabriel's staged death.
Payments to intermediaries.
Messages discussing the highway incident.
Instructions to prevent him from contacting his family.
Élodie stared at the evidence.
For seven years, she had been told her brother's death was an accident.
Now she understood that the truth had been deliberately hidden.
But the most painful discovery came from a folder labeled MARTIN FAMILY.
Inside were reports about Élodie's life.
Her salary.
Her rent.
Her grocery purchases.
Her son's school schedule.
Her medical appointments.
Even photographs of her walking to work.
Someone had been monitoring her for years.
Élodie felt sick.
Thomas looked at the documents.
“This is how Laurent always seemed to know what you were doing.”
She remembered the divorce negotiations.
The unexpected accusations.
The private details Laurent's lawyers had used against her.
She had wondered how he knew so much.
Now she understood.
He hadn't simply been watching.
He had been collecting information to control her.
Then Claire found another folder.
CUSTODY STRATEGY.
Élodie opened it.
The documents contained notes about the court case.
Plans to emphasize her modest income.
Suggestions for portraying her grief as emotional instability.
A schedule of witnesses.
And references to pressure placed on Mathéo.
Élodie's hands shook.
“They planned everything.”
Claire nodded grimly.
“But this is evidence we can present to the appropriate authorities and court.”
Élodie looked at her.
“Can we bring him home?”
“We have a much stronger basis to seek protective orders and a custody review. The decision will be made by the court, but Mathéo's safety and the coercion he experienced are central.”
Élodie closed the folder.
She wanted to scream.
Instead, she took a breath.
“Then let's make sure nobody can bury this.”
Over the next several days, investigators examined the records.
Financial authorities began tracing transactions.
Witnesses were interviewed.
Several former employees agreed to cooperate.
Sophie Lambert, the widow who had lost her retirement savings, provided records of her investments.
Marc and Anne Dubois described how funds intended for their daughter's medical treatment had disappeared.
Other families came forward.
Some had remained silent because they were ashamed.
Others because they had been threatened.
Élodie listened to their stories.
She realized that Laurent hadn't only stolen money.
He had stolen peace.
Security.
Trust.
The belief that the world was safe.
And yet these families had survived.
They had continued raising children.
Caring for loved ones.
Working.
Helping one another.
Their courage gave Élodie strength.
Meanwhile, Laurent's carefully constructed world began collapsing.
Several accounts were frozen.
Corporate offices were searched under judicial authorization.
Associates were questioned.
Isabelle attempted to leave Paris.
She was stopped and brought in for questioning.
Hélène's professional conduct came under investigation.
Adrien was detained in Canada in connection with Mathéo's confinement and the violence at the clinic.
But Étienne Delmas remained publicly calm.
He issued a statement denying wrongdoing.
He called the allegations malicious.
He promised full cooperation.
Then he did something unexpected.
He contacted Élodie directly.
A letter arrived at Claire's office.
It contained a single invitation.
Mrs. Martin,
There are truths your brother has not told you.
Meet me, and I will explain why your son was always at the center of this matter.
Come alone.
Étienne Delmas.
Claire read the letter.
“Absolutely not.”
Élodie agreed.
She had no intention of meeting him alone.
But she wanted to know what he was hiding.
Through her lawyer, she offered a recorded interview in the presence of investigators.
Étienne refused.
Then he sent a second message.
This one contained a photograph.
It showed a young Laurent standing beside Gabriel.
Both were smiling.
Between them stood Étienne.
On the back was a handwritten date.
August 14, 2012.
Élodie frowned.
That was the summer before she met Laurent.
She looked closer.
Gabriel appeared comfortable.
Happy.
As though he had known Laurent for years.
Her heart began racing.
She called Gabriel.
“Why didn't you tell me you knew Laurent before I met him?”
Silence.
Then Gabriel whispered:
“Ellie…”
“Answer me.”
He lowered his head.
“Because I introduced you to him.”
Élodie stared at the screen.
“And I didn't know?”
Gabriel's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was ashamed.”
“Of what?”
Gabriel swallowed.
“Laurent didn't meet you by accident.”
A long silence followed.
May you like
Then he said:
“Étienne sent him.”
