Chapter 12: The Alleyway Escape

We burst into the narrow, sun-bleached service alley behind the diner, flanked by towering metal dumpsters and rows of stacked wooden pallets. The heat radiated off the brick walls like an open oven, but there was no time to hesitate. Heavy footsteps hammered against the metal exit door behind us, followed immediately by the sharp, commanding voice of the man in the black suit ordering us to stop.
"Over here!" I hissed, grabbing the girl's shoulder and steering her toward a rusted chain-link fence that separated the alley from a municipal parking lot filled with commuter cars.
The fence was easily six feet tall, topped with a string of tangled barbed wire, but it was our only route away from the open highway where vehicles could easily spot us. I dropped to one knee, cupped my hands together, and looked down at the young girl in the pink dress.
"Up," I urged, my voice tight with urgency. "Put your foot right here. Don't look back."
She placed her small sneaker in my hands without a single sign of hesitation. With a sharp upward thrust, I hoisted her toward the top of the fence. Her small hands found the steel top rail, and she scrambled over with astonishing agility, her white bunny backpack swinging against the chain-link mesh before she dropped safely into the gravel lot on the other side.
A heavy crash sounded behind me as the heavy metal emergency door of the diner was thrown wide open.
"Found them! In the alley!"
I grabbed the top of the fence, hauled my own weight upward, and swung my legs over the barrier just as a pair of leather shoes skidded onto the pavement behind the dumpsters. I dropped hard onto the loose gravel of the municipal lot, stumbling forward before catching my balance and grabbing the girl's hand once again.

A row of parked commuter vehicles offered brief concealment. We ducked low, weaving between a faded sedan and a delivery van just as the pursuers reached the fence behind us. Peeking past a chrome bumper, I saw the man in the black suit grab the top of the chain-link barrier, his expression twisted into a mask of cold frustration as he realized we had slipped through his grasp once again.
We kept low until we reached the far side of the lot, slipping unnoticed into the stream of foot traffic moving toward the local county transit hub.
