Chapter 13 - The Threshold of Glass and Iron

The private coastal estate looked exactly as it had on the night I climbed down the black iron fire escape—imposing, silent, and impossibly grand against the crashing surf. I didn't use the service entrance or slip through the perimeter hedges. I walked straight up the main gravel driveway in broad daylight, my faded flannel shirt contrasting sharply with the manicured lawns and towering iron gates that swung open for me before I even reached the intercom. The security guards stationed near the main entrance didn't draw their weapons or shout orders; they simply watched me pass with silent, respectful nods, as if my return had been scheduled on a master calendar weeks in advance. My heart thudded against my ribs like a trapped bird, but my steps remained steady as I crossed the flagstone courtyard and pushed open the heavy oak doors of the main house. The interior hallway smelled faintly of aged leather, sea salt, and expensive cologne—a sensory anchor to a life I thought I had shredded to pieces.
I didn't stop in the grand foyer or call out for help. I walked directly down the oak-paneled corridor toward the subterranean security room, the place where multi-screen monitors tracked every square inch of the estate. The heavy door was cracked open, casting a narrow wedge of amber light across the dark floorboards. When I pushed it wide, the scene mirrored the night of my escape with terrifying precision. Gabriel sat in the same high-backed leather chair facing the bank of glowing monitors, holding a fresh glass of amber scotch. But this time, Cole and the other guards weren't standing behind him. The room was entirely empty except for the two of us. Gabriel didn't turn around immediately; he simply watched my reflection in the center screen, where a live exterior camera feed captured the doorway I had just walked through. He took a slow sip of his drink, swirling the ice cubes against the crystal, before lowering the glass to the mahogany armrest and turning his head to meet my gaze with dark, unreadable eyes.
