Chapter 10 - THE HOUSE OF FALSE PROMISES

“IF THEY WANT THE BLACK FILE, THEY CAN HAVE IT. BUT THEY'RE NOT TAKING MY MOTHER FROM ME AGAIN!”
Isabelle stood beside the hotel window, gripping her phone.
The message was clear.
Bring the black file.
Come alone.
Midnight.
The old Vasseur estate.
Alexandre stood behind her.
“You're not going alone.”
Isabelle turned.
“They said they'd kill her.”
“And you think they'll keep their promise if you give them what they want?”
She looked away.
He was right.
But the thought of losing Claire again was unbearable.
Elena entered the room.
“I know the estate.”
Isabelle looked toward her.
“How?”
“I've been there before.”
Alexandre frowned.
“When?”
“Last year. Mercer took me there when he was trying to convince me he could help expose the network.”
Carter, standing near the door, crossed her arms.
“Then you can help us plan a safe response.”
Elena nodded.
For the first time, she seemed willing to trust someone outside her own plans.
Carter coordinated with a tactical team and obtained the necessary emergency authorization.
The goal was simple.
Locate Claire and Margaret.
Identify the person behind the threats.
Recover any evidence.
Avoid unnecessary violence.
Isabelle would not be allowed to enter the estate alone.
Instead, investigators would establish surveillance while attempting to contact the kidnappers.
But Isabelle insisted on one thing.
“I want them to know I'm there.”
Carter studied her.
“Why?”
“Because whoever is doing this thinks I'm afraid.”
“Are you?”
Isabelle nodded.
“Terrified.”
Carter's expression softened.
“Good. Fear can keep you careful.”
At eleven thirty that night, the old Vasseur estate appeared through the trees.
The mansion had been abandoned for decades.
Its stone walls were dark.
Its windows reflected the moonlight.
A fountain stood dry in the circular driveway.
The place looked like a monument to a family that had forgotten how to love.
Isabelle stepped from the car.
A hidden microphone rested beneath her collar.
Carter's voice came through her earpiece.
“We have eyes on the property. Stay where we can see you.”
Isabelle nodded.
She carried the black folder.
But the most important original documents had already been secured.
The folder contained certified copies and a tracking device.
A light appeared in an upstairs window.
Then the front door opened.
A man stepped onto the porch.
Daniel Mercer.
He wore a dark coat.
His hair had turned gray.
But his posture remained rigid and controlled.
“Isabelle Moreau,” he called.
She stood still.
“Where's my mother?”
Mercer smiled faintly.
“Inside.”
“Let me see her.”
“Give me the folder.”
Isabelle raised it.
“Not until I know she's alive.”
Mercer studied her.
“You have your father's stubbornness.”
“And you have his blood on your hands.”
His expression changed.
For a moment, he looked almost ashamed.
Then he stepped aside.
“Come in.”
Carter's voice whispered through the earpiece.
“Do not enter until we confirm the interior.”
Isabelle remained on the porch.
Mercer noticed.
“You're wearing a wire.”
Her heart jumped.
He smiled.
“Of course you are.”
Then he raised both hands.
“Tell your police friends I'm unarmed.”
Carter's voice came through the earpiece.
“Isabelle, step back.”
But Mercer continued.
“I didn't bring you here to kill you.”
“Then why?”
“Because someone wants you to believe I was the one who murdered your father.”
Isabelle stared at him.
“You attacked him.”
“Yes.”
“You left him unconscious.”
“Yes.”
“You took money from Gabriel.”
“Yes.”
“Then what am I supposed to believe?”
Mercer's expression darkened.
“That I was ordered to frighten him. Not kill him.”
Isabelle felt cold.
“Who ordered his death?”
Mercer looked toward the house.
“That's what I've spent fifteen years trying to prove.”
A woman's voice suddenly emerged from inside.
“Isabelle?”
Her heart stopped.
“Mom?”
Claire appeared in the doorway.
Older.
Thin.
Trembling.
But alive.
Isabelle forgot everything.
She ran forward.
“Mom!”
Claire stumbled into her arms.
For a moment, the world disappeared.
There was no mansion.
No fortune.
No conspiracy.
Only a daughter holding the mother she had mourned for twenty years.
Claire sobbed against her shoulder.
“My baby.”
Isabelle clung to her.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I know.”
“Why didn't you come home?”
Claire began crying harder.
“I tried.”
Isabelle pulled back.
“What happened?”
Claire looked toward Mercer.
“He found me.”
Isabelle stiffened.
Mercer lowered his eyes.
Claire continued.
“But he didn't hurt me.”
Isabelle stared at her.
“What?”
“He helped me escape.”
The revelation stunned everyone.
Mercer stepped forward.
“Henri's people kept Claire hidden for years. I was hired to monitor her.”
“And then?” Isabelle asked.
“I discovered what they'd done to her.”
Claire gripped Isabelle's hand.
“He helped me contact Margaret.”
Isabelle looked toward the house.
“Where is she?”
Claire's face darkened.
“Inside. She's hurt, but she's alive.”
Carter's voice sounded through the earpiece.
“Isabelle, we're moving in.”
Within minutes, officers secured the estate.
Margaret Hale was found in an upstairs bedroom, frightened but conscious.
Medical personnel examined both women.
Mercer surrendered without resistance.
But the most important discovery came from the estate's basement.
Behind a false wall, investigators found a locked archive.
Inside were hundreds of files.
Medical records.
Financial ledgers.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
And a handwritten document bearing Étienne Moreau's signature.
Isabelle stared at it.
“The ledger.”
Mercer shook his head.
“No.”
She looked toward him.
“What?”
“That's only the index.”
Alexandre stepped closer.
“Where's the real ledger?”
Mercer looked toward Claire.
She lowered her eyes.
“Mom?” Isabelle whispered.
Claire began crying.
“Your father hid it somewhere nobody would think to search.”
“Where?”
Claire looked toward Isabelle and Elena.
“In the one place Henri could never reach.”
Elena frowned.
“What place?”
Claire took Isabelle's hand.
