Chapter 12 - MIDNIGHT AT THE ESTATE

Claire stared at the photograph.
Eleanor's face was pale.
But her eyes were open.
She was alive.
For now.
Rebecca reached for Claire's phone.
When she saw the image, she went rigid.
“He wants me.”
Natalie gripped her mother's arm.
“You're not going.”
Rebecca looked at her daughter.
“He'll hurt Eleanor.”
Claire turned toward Reed.
“We have to do something.”
Reed studied the photograph.
“Armand is trying to force a confrontation. We won't give him control.”
Claire struggled to remain calm.
Every instinct told her to act.
But she remembered her father.
He had believed the truth was worth protecting.
He had also believed people mattered more than money or reputation.
Eleanor mattered.
Rebecca mattered.
Natalie mattered.
Reed coordinated with state police and a tactical team while investigators attempted to establish where the photograph had been taken.
Daniel examined details in the background.
An antique wall clock.
Dark green wallpaper.
A brass lamp.
Claire recognized the room.
“The old guesthouse study.”
Reed nodded.
“Are you certain?”
“Yes. I cleaned it for six years.”
He relayed the information.
Meanwhile, Olivia arranged legal assistance for Rebecca and Natalie.
Neither woman would be forced into a private confrontation with Armand.
At 11:12 p.m., Claire received another call.
Armand.
“You're running out of time.”
Claire forced her voice to remain steady.
“Let me speak to Eleanor.”
“That's not necessary.”
“Then how do I know she's alive?”
A pause.
Then Eleanor's voice came through.
“Claire?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“I'm here.”
“Don't come.”
Armand interrupted.
“Enough.”
Claire spoke quickly.
“Eleanor, are you hurt?”
“No. But Grandmother—”
The call cut off.
Claire stared at the screen.
“What happened to Victoria?”
Reed's expression tightened.
They had lost contact with her.
At 11:26 p.m., the tactical team reached the estate perimeter.
Security cameras showed movement near the guesthouse.
But Armand's private guards complicated the situation.
Reed coordinated a controlled entry.
Claire remained at a secure command location several miles away.
She wanted to be there.
But she also knew that entering an active hostage situation would make everything more dangerous.
At 11:41, officers approached the guesthouse.
At 11:46, they announced their presence.
No response.
Then a gunshot rang out.
Claire heard it through Reed's radio.
Her stomach dropped.
“Eleanor!”
Reed raised a hand.
“Stay here.”
The radio crackled.
Officers entered.
A window shattered.
Someone shouted.
For a moment, Claire heard only overlapping voices.
Then a report came through.
“One female hostage located. Conscious. Moving her to safety.”
Claire began crying.
“Is she okay?”
Reed listened.
Then nodded.
“She's alive.”
Claire pressed both hands against her face.
But the relief lasted only seconds.
Another report followed.
“Suspect not located.”
Armand had escaped.
The team searched the guesthouse.
They found Eleanor inside the study.
Her wrists were bruised, but she had no serious injuries.
She told investigators that Armand had left through a service passage shortly before the police arrived.
“He knew they were coming,” she said.
Claire stared.
“How?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“He said he still had friends in the right places.”
Reed's expression darkened.
The investigation had already identified possible corruption among former local officials.
Now someone might have warned Armand.
Eleanor was taken for medical evaluation.
Claire met her at the hospital.
The two women embraced.
“I thought he was going to kill you,” Claire whispered.
Eleanor shook her head.
“He wanted to frighten you.”
“Why?”
“Because I found the truth.”
Claire stepped back.
“What truth?”
Eleanor looked toward the hallway.
Then lowered her voice.
“Grandmother gave me a key to Armand's private safe.”
Claire's heart accelerated.
“What was inside?”
“Photographs. Bank records. A handwritten statement.”
“Whose statement?”
Eleanor swallowed.
“My father's.”
Claire stared.
“Laurent confessed?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three days after the crash.”
Claire felt tears rising.
“What did he say?”
Eleanor looked at her.
“He admitted he was driving. He admitted he threatened Julien. And he admitted the crash happened because he tried to grab the documents from your father's hands.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Finally.
A confession.
But Eleanor wasn't finished.
“There was more.”
Claire looked up.
“Laurent said he begged his father to call an ambulance.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“He said he panicked after the crash. He was drunk and terrified. But he didn't want Julien to die.”
Claire felt anger and confusion collide.
“Then why did he leave him?”
“Armand ordered him to.”
Eleanor swallowed.
“He told Laurent that if Julien lived, the entire family would be destroyed.”
Claire stared at the hospital floor.
The accident had been caused by Laurent's reckless behavior.
But Armand had transformed it into something deliberate.
He had turned a survivable crash into a death sentence.
Then Eleanor reached into her coat.
She removed a small digital memory card.
“I photographed everything before Grandfather found me.”
Claire stared.
“Does Reed know?”
“Yes. I gave him the original files. This is another copy.”
Claire exhaled.
Then Eleanor said something that made her blood run cold.
“Claire, there's another confession.”
“Whose?”
Eleanor's face tightened.
“Victoria's.”
Claire waited.
May you like
Eleanor whispered:
“She admitted that she was the woman in the second car. And she saw Armand give the order that killed your father.”
