Chapter 6 - The Azure Motor Lodge

The Azure Motor Lodge sat off a forgotten stretch of county highway, its neon sign buzzing with a dying red hum against the gray pre-dawn sky. I paid the night clerk in cash, pulling the hood of my dry sweatshirt down over my face to avoid the smudged security camera above the office door. Room 14 smelled of damp carpet, bleach, and old pine cleaner. The window looked out onto a cracked asphalt parking lot where weeds pushed through the tar. I locked the deadbolt, dropped my worn canvas duffel bag by the foot of the twin bed, and stared at the prepaid burner phone Gideon had given me.

My fingers hovered over the plastic keypad. Forty-eight hours. It was a terrifying, impossible gift. Just as I reached to pick up the device, a sharp, frantic scratching sound scraped against the wooden door panel, followed by a muffled sob.

My heart slammed against my ribs. I froze, my hand dropping to my side as the scratching came again, lighter this time.

"Mom?"

The whisper was barely audible over the hum of the old wall-unit air conditioner, but it tore straight through me. I crossed the small room in two strides, threw the deadbolt, and pulled the door open.

Noah stood on the narrow concrete walkway, shivering in a thin gray zip-up hoodie that was far too large for him. His dark hair was tousled, his small face pale and pinched against the damp morning air. Before I could speak, he threw his arms around my waist, burying his face in my shirt with a choked gasp.

"How did you—how did you find me?" I whispered, dropping to my knees on the gritty pavement, pulling him tight against my chest as hot tears finally broke free.

"I heard dad talking on the phone," Noah murmured, his small hands clutching the fabric of my back as if he were afraid I would dissolve into mist. "He said you were at the Azure. I took my bike from the side garage. I didn't want him to catch me, Mom. I had to see you."

I pulled him inside, kicking the door shut with my heel and throwing the deadbolt back into place. Panic and fierce protective love warred inside my throat. Gideon’s security detail must have been lax during the shift change, or Noah’s sharp instincts had outmaneuvered them entirely. I stripped off the damp hoodie, wrapped him in a scratchy hotel blanket, and sat him on the edge of the mattress, chafing his cold hands between mine.

"Listen to me, Noah," I said, trying to steady my voice. "Your dad knows I'm here, but he doesn't know you left the estate. If his men find you here before we talk to him, everything falls apart. Do you understand?"

Noah nodded solemnly, his big dark eyes looking up at me with absolute trust. I picked up the burner phone, my hands shaking as I punched in Gideon’s direct private number, knowing the fragile truce was already broken.
