Chapter 15 - Quiet Morning Diner off the Highway

The neon sign of the highway diner buzzed softly against the morning sky, casting a warm amber glow over the worn red vinyl booths and the scratched laminate tables. The air smelled of burnt coffee, sizzling bacon, and maple syrup, a comforting, ordinary world far removed from sterile hospital corridors and corporate boardrooms. A small ceramic mug of black coffee sat between my hands, the rising steam curling upward into the cool air as I watched the traffic stream past on the highway outside.

The man in the dark suit slid into the booth across from me, setting down a small manila folder containing the final copies of the institutional restructuring documents. The shadow of the past months hadn't vanished entirely, but sitting here in the quiet hum of the diner, the weight of it had finally lifted from my shoulders. There were no more guards to dodge, no more altered logbooks to hide, and no more threats whispering down empty hallways.

"The federal prosecutor's office confirmed the indictments cleared an hour ago," he said softly, wrapping his hands around his own mug. "Harrison won't be practicing medicine again. Ever."

I let out a slow, steady breath, feeling a profound sense of peace settle deep into my chest. "Thank you," I said, looking up to meet his gaze. "You didn't have to get involved. You could have walked past that hallway just like everyone else."

"I don't ignore Marx's laws," he replied with a faint, rare hint of a smile touching the corner of his mouth. "And some lines shouldn't be crossed by anyone."

We sat in comfortable silence for a long moment, the quiet rhythm of the diner wrapping around us like a shield against the rest of the world. The road ahead was unwritten, filled with uncertainties and the slow, necessary work of true healing, but for the first time, the path was entirely my own to walk. I reached across the table, my hand brushing lightly against his, and as he turned his palm upward to interlace his fingers with mine, the morning sun finally broke through the clouds, bathing the highway in a clear, unbroken light.
