Chapter 5 - Before Dawn On County Road

The pre-dawn darkness hung heavy and cold over the rural county roads surrounding the Manor Vista estate, the sky a bruised slate gray before the sunrise. I watched from the second-story window of the guest suite as the sleek, unmarked dark sedan rolled silently down the crushed-stone driveway, its headlights extinguished until it passed the iron security gates. In the driver’s seat sat the bodyguard in his sharp black suit and tie, a steady, unyielding presence navigating the deserted tarmac. He had been dispatched on a quiet pre-dawn supply run and reconnaissance mission outside the manor grounds, tasked with meeting a confidential source at a designated waypoint to secure additional verification of the digital ledger.

The interior of the sedan was dim, illuminated only by the faint amber glow of the dashboard instrument cluster. The bodyguard kept both hands at ten and two on the steering wheel, his eyes scanning the rearview mirror every few seconds with practiced vigilance. The county road stretched out ahead of him, flanked by dormant cornfields and thick stands of bare oak trees that cast long, distorted shadows under the pale crescent moon. There was no local traffic at this hour, only the steady hum of the engine and the occasional soft click of the turn signal as he navigated the desolate intersections.

Twenty minutes later, the sedan pulled into the deserted parking lot of the Starlight Diner, a fading roadside establishment with a neon sign flickering a dull, intermittent red. The parking lot was empty save for a rusted pickup truck parked near the far grease-stained dumpster. The bodyguard cut the engine and waited in the shadowed perimeter of the lot, his gaze fixed on the fog-streaked windshield. Within three minutes, a weathered sedan drifted into the lot from the opposite direction, parking nose-to-nose with the bodyguard’s car.

A local informant—a middle-aged man wearing a faded canvas work jacket and a baseball cap pulled low over his forehead—stepped out of the vehicle and walked briskly through the frosty gravel. He pulled the passenger-side door open and slipped into the front seat of the bodyguard's car, bringing a sharp scent of damp earth and stale cigarette smoke into the confined space. Neither man wasted time on pleasantries. The informant reached into the inner pocket of his jacket and produced a thick manila envelope sealed with heavy red wax, sliding it across the center console.

"They're not just looking at the digital trails anymore," the informant muttered, his voice raspy and low, barely cutting through the low rumble of the car's idling heater. "The board members pulled physical duplicates of the employment files from the county records office three days ago. Your name is on every single manifest. They know you slipped out of the wing, and they're tracking every vehicle registered to the foundation."

The bodyguard took the envelope without a word, his thumb testing the thickness of the contents before sliding it into his suit coat. "Did anyone else access the municipal archives?"

"Just corporate legal," the informant replied, opening the door to step back out into the cold night air. "And watch your six on the return loop. The black SUVs from the downtown office have been sweeping the outer county lines since midnight. They're looking for movement."

The informant vanished back into his car, and both vehicles departed the diner lot in opposite directions. The bodyguard merged back onto the empty two-lane highway, maintaining a cautious, legal speed. But as he crested a gentle hill five miles from the Manor Vista gates, his eyes caught a pair of unlit headlights dropping out of a side lane a half-mile back in the rearview mirror. The trailing vehicle matched his speed, hugging the center line without signaling, keeping a deliberate, calculated distance that signaled professional surveillance rather than random local travel. The bodyguard’s grip tightened on the steering wheel, his expression darkening as he realized their return route was compromised.
