Chapter 1 - Spilled Whiskey And Shattered Glass On A Dark Marble Countertop

The sharp bite of cheap amber whiskey burned the raw skin of my lower lip, mixing with the metallic taste of fresh blood. My fingers, slick and trembling, gripped the rough plastic of the black burner smartphone as I pressed it hard against my ear. Around me, the Sapphire Lounge hummed with a low, nervous frequency, the kind of quiet that follows sudden violence in an upscale room. The crystal chandeliers overhead cast a soft, warm amber glow across the polished mahogany bar and the dark marble countertop, where a jagged puddle of spilled liquor reflected distorted shards of light from broken highball glasses.

My breath came in ragged, shallow gasps, fogging the cold air around my face. My hair, hastily twisted into a messy bun, felt heavy and damp against the back of my neck. I could feel the weight of my black top with its crisp white collar and stiff white apron—the heavy uniform of a place I had thought was safe, reduced tonight to a stage for a quiet, brutal reminder of who held the leash.

The phone crackled against my ear, a dead static hissing through the speaker before a sharp intake of breath sounded from the other end. The distance across the city evaporated in an instant, replaced by a voice I had known since childhood, smooth and heavy with cold expectation.

"Daddy," I whispered.

The line held for a fraction of a second, the silence stretching taut before the familiar, clipped voice murmured back through the tiny speaker.

"Clara?"

A tear broke free from my left eye, rolling hot and fast down my cheek, cutting a clean path through the film of dust and sweat. I didn't blink. My green eyes fixed on the tall man standing just a few feet away from me. He didn't flinch, didn't move to help, but simply watched with a guarded, heavy gaze. He was thirty-two, sharply dressed in an immaculate black suit that contrasted with the dark ink of the tattoos wrapping around his thick neck and disappearing beneath his cuffs. His dark hair and trimmed beard gave him an edge of quiet authority that didn't belong in a room like this.

I held the burner phone out toward him, my arm shaking with the exertion of keeping it steady.

"Put him on," I said.

The man didn't hesitate. He stepped forward, closing the distance between us with a fluid, measured grace, and took the phone from my trembling fingers. His dark eyes locked onto mine for a brief, heavy moment before he lowered his gaze to the device, lifting it to his own ear. His jaw tightened instantly, a muscle ticking along his jawline as he waited for the connection to settle.

"Who is this?" he demanded, his voice low, gravelly, and entirely unimpressed by the weight of the name attached to the line.

He listened for three long seconds, his expression hardening into absolute granite as the voice on the other end identified himself or made his demand. The man's shoulders squared, and a cold, lethal realization settled over his features, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous focus.

"Alessandro Viti," he said.
