Chapter 15: The Dawn of Reckoning

I threw my weight against the push-bar of the stairwell exit, and the heavy metal door swung outward, flooding the dim interior with bright, unobstructed morning sunlight. We spilled out into the narrow brick alleyway behind the municipal archive, the crisp air rushing into my lungs as I paused against the cool brick wall to catch my breath.
Across the wide avenue, the main glass entrance of LE CIEL was now a scene of absolute controlled chaos. Federal marshals in dark tactical vests and windbreakers had cordoned off the black-and-white checkered tiled entrance, holding back a crowd of panicked corporate executives and bewildered onlookers. Through the expansive glass doors, I could see Richard Sterling himself standing in the center of the grand marble lobby, his face pale and contorted with fury as two federal agents placed cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. He looked out through the glass, his eyes scanning the crowd in a desperate search for someone to blame, never expecting that the man who had brought his empire down was standing quietly across the street in a borrowed wool suit jacket.
Elena stepped out beside me, her trench coat flapping slightly in the morning breeze. She looked down at the entrance, then turned her gaze toward me, a slow, genuine smile breaking through the tension that had gripped her face for months. The bruises on my neck and the rough scruff on my jaw were still there, but as I reached into my pocket and felt the cool, solid weight of the recovered server drives, I knew those marks no longer defined me. They were simply the price of admission to a truth that could no longer be buried.
"They got him," Elena whispered, the tension finally draining from her shoulders.

"They got the frontman," I replied, my voice steady and quiet as I watched Sterling being led out past the black awning under the glaring morning light. "Now we make sure the rest of the board follows."
I pulled the steel pen from my pocket and held it out toward her, not as a symbol of corporate authority, but as a shared tool for whatever came next. She looked at it for a brief moment, then reached out and took it, her fingers brushing mine with a quiet, certain warmth. Together, we turned away from the luxury tower and walked down the sunny sidewalk toward the courthouse, leaving the glass doors of LE CIEL behind us for good.
