Chapter 15: Stepping Into the Light

The flashing blue and red lights of federal cruisers painted the crystal chandeliers in rhythmic, strobe-like pulses as heavy boots swarmed the grand entrance of the estate. Shouts echoed from the foyer as agents in tactical gear secured the perimeter, clearing the dining hall with weapons drawn and badges held high.

Viktor didn't resist. He stood by the marble fireplace with his hands resting casually behind his back, offering no argument as two agents stepped forward and snapped cold steel cuffs around his wrists. He didn't look at the marshals, and he didn't look at the shattered remnants of his candlelit banquet table. His dark eyes remained fixed on me through the entire procession, a silent acknowledgment passing between us that needed no translation. As they led him away toward the arched double doors, the weight of the last three years seemed to lift from my shoulders, dissolving into the cold morning air drifting in from the broken windows.

I turned my back on the hearth, walking slowly out of the formal dining room for the very last time. My bare feet stepped over the threshold of the grand house, leaving faint prints of mud and blood on the white stone of the portico.

Outside, the autumn sun had finally burned through the gray mist, flooding the county road with brilliant, unsparing gold. A state police cruiser idled at the foot of the drive, its rear door open. Inside the warm cabin, safe and wrapped in a thick wool blanket, Leo looked up through the glass as I approached, a hesitant smile breaking across his tired face. Sarah sat beside him, weeping silent tears of relief as she reached out to pull me inside.

I slid into the backseat, pulling my son into my arms and burying my face in his hair, breathing in the clean scent of soap and safety. The car shifted into gear, crunching down the gravel drive as we left the gates of the estate behind us forever. Ahead lay the open highway, a quiet morning, and a future that belonged entirely to us.
