Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the CompanyFor a long time, I couldn't stop staring at the signature.

It looked almost perfect.

The long curve of the E.

The sharp angle of the C.

Even the small upward flourish I added at the end of my name.

Someone had studied my handwriting.

Someone had practiced it.

And someone had placed it on a business document I had never seen.

“That's not mine,” I whispered.

Maya leaned closer.

“Emily, it looks exactly like your handwriting.”

“I know.”

“Are you sure you didn't sign something like this?”

I turned toward her.

“I'm absolutely sure.”

The document identified me as the original organizer of Northstar Property Services LLC.

A later filing had transferred control to Vanessa Cole.

According to the records, the company had existed for nearly eighteen months.

Longer than Ryan had admitted knowing Vanessa.

Longer than the affair messages we'd found.

I remembered Ryan telling me he was hiring a financial consultant to help expand his business.

He had described Vanessa as intelligent, ambitious, and extremely good at managing difficult projects.

I had encouraged him to hire her.

I had even suggested inviting her to dinner.

The memory made me feel foolish.

But something Nora had said kept repeating in my mind.

The records contain your name.

Ryan hadn't merely hidden an affair.

He had been using my identity to help build something behind my back.

Nora called again later that afternoon.

“We're referring the documents for review and coordinating with Detective Ortiz. A signature appearing on a filing is not proof that you knowingly authorized anything.”

“Could I be blamed for what they've done?”

“Someone may try to involve you, but we're preserving evidence of your lack of knowledge and challenging the documents. Don't communicate directly with Ryan or Vanessa about this.”

I stared at the forged signature.

“Why would he use my name?”

“We're still working on that.”

After ending the call, Maya took my hand.

“Ryan knows how much you trust him.”

I shook my head.

“Trusted.”

She nodded.

“Trusted.”

That single change in tense hurt more than I expected.

By evening, the nurses had helped me walk a few steps beside my bed.

My recovery was painful and slow.

Every movement reminded me of the surgery.

My shoulder and hip were bruised from the fall.

A tender injury near my hairline made it uncomfortable to rest my head against the pillow.

But I wanted to recover.

I wanted to hold my daughter.

I wanted to walk into the NICU without assistance and tell Grace that her mother was strong enough to keep going.

During my second visit that evening, Ruth helped me sit beside the incubator.

“She's doing well with her current support,” Ruth explained. “We're pleased with some of her numbers today.”

I studied the monitors.

“Will she be able to come home soon?”

Ruth answered gently.

“She's still very early. She needs time to grow, learn to regulate her temperature, breathe without assistance, and feed safely. We'll celebrate each milestone as it comes.”

I nodded.

Time.

For the first time in my life, time felt like something precious and frightening.

Every day Grace remained in the hospital was another day I couldn't bring her home.

But every day also gave her a chance to grow stronger.

I rested my hand against the incubator.

“Take all the time you need, sweetheart.”

Ruth smiled.

“That sounds like a good plan.”

When I returned to my room, Maya was waiting with her laptop.

Her expression told me something had happened.

“I went through the footage again.”

I felt my pulse quicken.

“What did you find?”

“I noticed Ryan and Vanessa were standing outside longer than we thought.”

She opened the original recording through the secure camera account.

The timestamp showed twenty-three minutes before my fall.

Ryan was leaning against the porch railing.

Vanessa stood beside him.

At first, their conversation sounded ordinary.

They discussed a bank verification request.

A project deadline.

A scheduled inspection.

Then Ryan's voice changed.

“The auditor gets here Monday. If the account doesn't balance, I'm finished.”

Vanessa shifted impatiently.

“Then move the money.”

“It's not that simple. Emily still gets transaction alerts.”

“She won't check them if she's busy dealing with something else.”

Ryan looked toward the staircase.

“We just need a few days.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“And how exactly do you suggest we get those?”

Ryan didn't answer immediately.

Then he said something that made my skin crawl.

“She's already talking about leaving me. If she makes a scene, we can tell everyone she's having some kind of breakdown.”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Ryan, I don't want anyone getting hurt.”

“Then don't hurt anyone.”

He stepped closer.

“Just make sure she doesn't walk away calmly. If she starts shouting, if she loses control, nobody will question why I'm handling her affairs.”

My mouth went dry.

He hadn't ordered Vanessa to push me in those words.

But he had deliberately created a situation meant to make me look irrational.

He wanted me frightened.

He wanted me publicly discredited.

And he wanted control of my finances while I struggled to defend myself.

Then the recording revealed something else.

Vanessa asked, “And the baby?”

Ryan looked toward the house.

He gave a tired sigh.

“Emily can worry about the baby. I have a company to save.”

I stopped breathing for a moment.

Maya immediately paused the video.

“Emily?”

I couldn't speak.

I had spent months believing Ryan was excited to become a father.

He had helped me choose Grace's name.

He had kissed ultrasound photographs.

He had told our friends that becoming a parent was the most important thing he would ever do.

And now I had heard him dismiss our daughter as though she were an inconvenience.

I began crying quietly.

Not because I still wanted Ryan.

But because I was mourning a man who had never really existed.

Maya moved closer.

“You don't have to watch any more tonight.”

I shook my head.

“I do.”

“Emily—”

“I need to know everything.”

She hesitated, then pressed play.

Ryan and Vanessa moved out of frame.

For several minutes, the camera showed the empty porch.

Then I appeared carrying my overnight bag.

The confrontation followed.

Vanessa shouting.

Me trying to leave.

Her hands striking my shoulders.

My fall.

The sickening silence afterward.

Vanessa coming down the steps.

Her cruel words.

And finally, Ryan opening the front door.

I watched him look at me.

Look at the blood.

Then walk toward Vanessa.

Maya covered her mouth.

I had lived through those moments.

But seeing them from the outside was different.

There was no confusion.

No misunderstanding.

No reasonable explanation for what they had done.

Then, as Ryan crouched beside me, the camera captured his threat.

His voice was clear.

His face visible.

His words unmistakable.

Maya stopped the recording.

“That's enough.”

I didn't argue.

Because the truth was finally undeniable.

My husband had used fear to protect a financial secret.

And when Vanessa injured me, he had chosen that secret over our daughter.

The next morning, Detective Ortiz returned with another investigator.

They took formal statements and explained the importance of preserving the complete original recording, including the footage before and after the assault.

Then Ortiz asked a question that surprised me.

“Mrs. Carter, are you familiar with a residential development called Willow Creek Family Apartments?”

I frowned.

“Ryan's company renovated part of it last year.”

“Did you ever visit the property?”

“Once. Why?”

The detective exchanged a glance with her colleague.

“Because we believe some of the questionable payments may be connected to that project.”

My stomach tightened.

“Connected how?”

Ortiz closed her notebook.

“Several renovation invoices indicate that work was completed and paid for. We're trying to determine whether that work was actually done.”

I stared at her.

“What kind of work?”

She hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Fire-safety upgrades. Heating repairs. Equipment intended to protect the families living there.”

A chill went through me.

Families.

Children.

People who had trusted Ryan's company to make their homes safe.

And suddenly, I understood that my husband's betrayal might extend far beyond our marriage.

Then Detective Ortiz delivered the news that changed everything.

“Emily, one of the residents has reported that her little boy was hospitalized after a problem with the heating system.”

May you like

She paused.

“And according to the payment records, your name appears on the document approving that contractor's final invoice.”
