Chapter 4 - The Custody Battle He Never Started“YOUR HONOR, I DID NOT FILE THIS PETITION. I DID NOT AUTHORIZE IT. AND I WILL NOT LET SOMEONE USE MY NAME TO TAKE THESE CHILDREN FROM THEIR MOTHER.”

Nathan stood before the judge, his voice steady.

Across the courtroom, Emma sat beside Leah Moreno.

Her hands were clasped so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

She hadn't slept.

Ethan and Noah were staying with Tasha Bell, Emma's closest friend and a fellow teacher, who had helped care for the twins since infancy.

Emma trusted Tasha completely.

But leaving the boys that morning had been agony.

Noah had noticed her worry.

“Are we moving again, Mommy?”

Emma had kissed his forehead.

“Not today, sweetheart.”

She desperately hoped the answer would remain true.

The emergency family-court hearing had attracted unexpected attention.

Two local reporters waited outside.

Someone had leaked the petition to a celebrity news website with a sensational headline accusing Nathan Harrison of seeking custody of his impoverished children.

Within hours, thousands of strangers had begun discussing Emma's parenting, her finances, and the condition of her apartment.

Some called her a brave single mother.

Others accused her of hiding wealthy children to collect money.

Nobody seemed interested in the truth.

Inside the courtroom, the judge reviewed the documents carefully.

Judge Margaret Ellison was a middle-aged woman with a calm voice and an expression that revealed little.

She had spent more than twenty years hearing cases involving children.

She knew that powerful adults sometimes attempted to turn family courts into weapons.

But she also understood that accusations required evidence.

“Mr. Harrison,” she said, “are you denying that these are your children?”

“No, Your Honor. I believe they are my sons, and I'm willing to establish paternity through proper legal procedures.”

“Are you requesting emergency custody?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Have you retained the attorney whose name appears on this petition?”

“No. I have never spoken with him.”

The judge turned toward the attorney representing the petitioner.

The man looked uncomfortable.

“Counsel, who instructed your office to file these documents?”

The attorney cleared his throat.

“Our firm received written authorization through Harrison family representatives.”

“That wasn't my question,” the judge replied.

The room fell silent.

Leah rose.

“Your Honor, we believe the petition was submitted without Mr. Harrison's knowledge and contains materially misleading allegations against Ms. Parker.”

She placed photographs of Emma's apartment, medical records, and school employment documentation before the court.

“Ms. Parker has raised these children continuously since birth. They attend preschool, receive regular medical care, and have stable relationships with caregivers.”

Emma lowered her gaze.

Hearing someone defend her motherhood with photographs and paperwork made her feel exposed in a way she had never imagined.

Four years of sacrifice had been reduced to exhibits.

Leah continued.

“Poverty is not abandonment. Financial hardship is not evidence that a parent is unfit.”

Nathan looked toward Emma.

He wished she could see herself the way the boys saw her.

Not as a struggling woman counting coins.

But as the center of their world.

After reviewing the available evidence, Judge Ellison declined to grant emergency custody.

She ordered the questionable filing preserved for investigation and scheduled further proceedings concerning paternity and the allegations of unauthorized signatures.

Emma released a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.

But the judge wasn't finished.

“I also expect all parties to understand something,” she said. “These children are not assets to be acquired. They are human beings whose stability must come first.”

Nathan lowered his eyes.

The words sounded painfully familiar.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded them.

“Mr. Harrison! Are you planning to take custody?”

“Ms. Parker! Did you hide the children because you wanted money?”

“Nathan, is your father involved?”

Emma flinched at the last question.

Nathan stepped toward the microphones.

“My children have a loving mother,” he said. “Any report suggesting that I filed an emergency petition to remove them from her care is false.”

A reporter leaned forward.

“Then who filed it?”

Nathan looked directly into the camera.

“That's what I intend to find out.”

He refused further questions.

As Emma moved toward Leah's car, Nathan followed at a respectful distance.

“Emma.”

She stopped.

“I know you didn't file it,” she said.

Nathan was surprised.

“You do?”

“You looked as horrified as I felt.”

He exhaled.

“I don't know how to apologize for what my family has done.”

“Then don't apologize for your father's choices. Take responsibility for yours.”

He nodded.

“I'm trying.”

Emma studied him.

“For the boys' sake, I hope you mean that.”

By evening, Leah had obtained additional information about the disputed petition.

It appeared to have been prepared by an outside attorney who had received instructions from a holding company controlled by Richard Harrison.

A formal investigation would take time.

And time was becoming something Emma didn't have.

Because while she was defending her children in court, another crisis had begun unfolding near her apartment.

At five-thirty, Tasha called.

“Emma, you need to come home.”

Emma stood beside her kitchen table.

“What's wrong?”

“City inspectors are here. They posted something on your building.”

Emma's stomach dropped.

“What kind of notice?”

Tasha hesitated.

“An emergency structural safety order.”

Emma hurried to the front window.

Two municipal vehicles stood outside.

Several residents had gathered near the entrance.

A bright orange notice had been taped beside the door.

Emma rushed downstairs.

The notice declared the building potentially unsafe and required residents to prepare for emergency relocation pending further inspection.

The building manager was arguing with an inspector.

“There's nothing wrong with this building!”

The inspector refused to meet his eyes.

“We're following instructions.”

Emma read the final paragraph.

The property was located within the Westhaven Renewal redevelopment area.

A project controlled by Harrison Development.

She immediately called Nathan.

“Your father's going after our home.”

Nathan was already reaching for his coat.

“I'll come over.”

“Bring someone who knows how to stop this.”

Nathan looked toward the little dinosaur Noah had given him.

“I will.”

But when he reached the building forty minutes later, Emma was standing outside with a document in her hand.

Her face had gone pale.

“Nathan,” she whispered, “look at the date.”

The inspection report authorizing the emergency order had been signed three days earlier.

Before the inspectors had even examined the property.

And the company requesting the inspection was a Harrison subsidiary.
