Chapter 15 - The Silver Band

The morning air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming roses across the private estate's front porch. Inside the house, the quiet hum of domestic life had entirely replaced the tension of our arrival weeks ago. The boy was upstairs, sleeping peacefully in his own room without a single trace of the fear that once defined him.
I stood near the railing, watching the golden light break over the tall iron gates that now protected a sanctuary rather than a prison. Footsteps echoed softly on the wooden planks behind me, and a moment later, Julian's arms slipped around my waist, pulling me back against the solid warmth of his chest. He smelled of cedar and coffee, the tailored black suit replaced by a simple dark shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing the intricate ink of his hand tattoos.
"He's still asleep," I whispered, leaning my head back against his shoulder.
"Let him sleep," Julian murmured, resting his chin gently against my hair. "He earned every quiet hour."
Instead of a glass of whiskey or a stack of hundred-dollar bills, Julian's hand moved slowly from my waist, coming to rest in front of me. Between his fingers sat a simple, unadorned silver band, catching the morning light without a single trace of flash or pretense. It was an object stripped of all the violence, cash, and tactical paranoia that had brought us together under the crystal chandelier. It was purely, unmistakably human.
Julian turned me gently in his arms so I was facing him. His dark eyes held an intense, unwavering focus, but the jagged edges of his guarded world had completely dissolved.
"No more running," Julian said quietly, his voice steady and absolute. "No more safehouses. Just a home. For all of us."
He slid the silver band onto my finger. It fit with absolute perfection, warm against my skin. I looked up at him, my heart steady and full, knowing every word he spoke was an anchor that would hold against any storm.

"Yes," I answered softly, reaching up to rest my hand against his cheek, feeling the steady rhythm of his breathing beneath my palm.
Down the gravel driveway, the morning birds sang out in the trees, welcoming a day that held no threats, only a future we had chosen together.
