Chapter 15 - A Morning Overlooking the City Skyline

The morning sun broke over the eastern ridge, flooding the high-rise penthouse bedroom with brilliant, golden daylight that danced across the white linens and polished hardwood floors. The storm had passed entirely, leaving the city skyline crisp, clear, and washed clean by the rain. A fresh breeze drifted through the cracked balcony doors, carrying the faint, distant hum of morning traffic from the avenues far below.

I stood near the large floor-to-ceiling window, holding a warm ceramic mug of black coffee and looking out over the bustling metropolis. The world down there was moving at its usual frantic pace, entirely unaware of the quiet war that had been fought and won in the shadows over the past few weeks. My bruises had finally faded to a faint, yellowish hue, and the sharp ache in my ribs had dulled to a manageable memory, replaced by a profound and unfamiliar sense of internal peace.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest. Gabriel rested his chin gently on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair as he looked out at the panoramic view with me. His dark wavy hair was slightly tousled from sleep, and the sharp edges of his usual corporate armor were completely absent in the quiet intimacy of the morning.

"He's awake," Gabriel murmured with a faint, genuine smile, nodding his head toward the wide oak doorway behind us.

Down the hall, a small, triumphant giggle echoed from the nursery, breaking the quiet stillness of the morning. We walked back together, stepping quietly into the sunlit room where Eli was standing by the edge of his wooden crib, gripping the polished rails with both tiny hands. He wobbled unsteadily on his feet, looked up at us with wide, bright eyes, and took one—then two—unassisted steps forward across the plush carpet before collapsing securely into the soft padding of the rug with a joyful gurgle.

I knelt down instantly, scooping him up into my arms and laughing as he grabbed playfully at the collar of my shirt, his baby laughter filling the entire room with light. Gabriel knelt beside us, wrapping one arm around my shoulders and resting his hand gently against Eli's back, completing the circle of protection and belonging we had fought so desperately to build.

The threats were gone. The corporate factions had been dismantled by the full weight of the law, and Marcus Sterling's conspiracy had been thoroughly exposed before the board of directors. The safehouses, the ambushes, and the terror of the highway belonged to a past we had successfully left behind. Mason Reed stood guard outside the perimeter, his own injuries healing as he oversaw a completely restructured and loyal security detail.

Looking down at the boy in my arms and the man kneeling beside me, I finally knew what it meant to be home. There were no more guards to post, no more vehicles to evade, and no more secrets to hide from the people who mattered most. We were safe, we were together, and the future stretched out before us without fear.
